Stephanie R. Akbari, MD, FACS

Stephanie R. Akbari, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Akbari is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Mount Holyoke College and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Her surgical internship, residency, and chief residency were performed at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, where she also completed a two-year National Institutes of Health Research Fellowship. Prior to coming to Northern Virginia, Dr. Akbari was on the faculty of the Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts, where she worked as a full-time breast surgeon at the Lahey Clinic Breast Center.

As the first female surgeon in Northern Virginia dedicated exclusively to diseases of the breast, Dr. Akbari has been integral in the implementation of minimally invasive techniques for the diagnosis of breast disease, such as in-office ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. She has incorporated the most advanced and newest approaches for breast cancer treatment, including sentinel node biopsy, accelerated partial breast radiation, and oncoplastic surgical techniques. She was the first surgeon in Northern Virginia to be certified by the American Society of Breast Surgeons in breast ultrasound.

Dr. Akbari is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Molly Sebastian, MD, FACS

Molly Sebastian, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A dedicated breast surgeon at the Center for Breast Health at Virginia Hospital Center, Dr. Sebastian is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She also received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. During her studies at UVA, she was awarded a National Science Foundation research grant. She completed her surgical residency at the Medical College of Virginia, where she was Administrative Chief Resident in her final year. During her residency, she received a prestigious National Institutes of Health Research Fellowship. Prior to joining the Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health at Virginia Hospital Center, Dr. Sebastian completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgical techniques at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Certified by the American Board of Surgery and a member of the Association of Women Surgeons, Dr. Sebastian is committed to the multidisciplinary coordination of breast health care and customizing treatment plans to the unique requirements of each patient. She, and her colleagues, strongly believe that no breast cancer journey should be done alone and they are there to provide the treatment and support individuals and families need.

Dr. Sebastian serves as Virginia Hospital Center’s physician liaison to the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. She is also a member of the Education Committee of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

Dr. Sebastian is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Negar Golesorkhi, MD

Negar Golesorkhi, M.D.

After completing a prestigious Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship, Arlington native and Yorktown High School graduate Negar Golesorkhi returned to the area in September 2009 to join the Center for Breast Health at Virginia Hospital Center. A dedicated breast surgeon, she is a graduate of George Mason University (B.S., Biology; M.S., Molecular Microbiology & Cell Biology) and the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University (M.S., Anatomy; M.D.). Dr. Golesorkhi fulfilled her surgical internship and surgical residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (Philadelphia, PA), where she also completed a grant funded research fellowship. Upon completion of her general surgery training, she pursued the esteemed Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA).

Dr. Golesorkhi believes that a fully informed patient is essential to any successful surgical plan. She forms partnerships with her patients and educates them on their unique breast disease process and treatment options. A frequent contributor to academic journals and presenter at clinical cancer and surgical symposiums, Dr. Golesorkhi has been recognized for her expertise with awards including The Breast Journal Award (First Place) at the 33rd Annual Symposium of the American Society of Breast Disease.

Dr. Golesorkhi’s professional affiliations include the American Society of Breast Disease, American Society of Breast Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and American College of Surgeons.

Mazen Bedri, MD

Mazen Bedri, M.D.

Specializing in the most advanced techniques of breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery, Dr. Bedri established Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center in April 2011. As Director of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery, he prides himself on a gentle, honest, and respectful approach with each patient. He carefully listens to each individual's concerns, and balances artistry and precision to attain outstanding cosmetic and reconstructive results.

Dr. Bedri is a graduate from the top-ranked Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He went on to complete his fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was selected as the Administrative Chief responsible for the Plastic Surgery academic curriculum. During his training, he focused on state-of-the-art techniques in microsurgery, breast augmentation and reconstruction, craniomaxillofacial surgery, liposuction and fat-grafting, and body contouring. Dr. Bedri was then accepted into a prestigious fellowship in Breast Reconstruction and Aesthetic Surgery at Mercy Medical Center (Baltimore, MD), where he gained additional expertise in the most advanced techniques of microsurgical breast reconstruction and cosmetic procedures.

Dr. Bedri tailors his surgical care to the unique needs of each person and delivers it with compassion. His dedication to working with breast cancer patients is supported by his expertise in innovative breast reconstruction techniques including DIEP, SGAP, and TUG flaps, as well as implant-based reconstructive surgeries. Dr. Bedri's close collaboration with the Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health at Virginia Hospital Center ensures that breast cancer patients receive streamlined, carefully-coordinated care in one convenient location.

Dr. Bedri is equally committed to helping individuals desiring facial or body procedures define and reach their aesthetic goals. He employs the most current cosmetic techniques and minimally- invasive procedures for enhancing and restoring the natural beauty of women and men of all ages. He specializes in rhinoplasty, facelift, injectables, cosmetic breast procedures, liposuction, and other cosmetic body surgery. Whether for aesthetic or reconstructive surgery, Dr. Bedri's superior surgical techniques and advanced training are brought to bear in enhancing form and function.

Dr. Bedri has been invited to lecture at scientific meetings both US and international, and has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. An active volunteer, he has participated in several humanitarian relief surgical missions in the Middle East and Central America. Dr. Bedri completed his undergraduate studies at the Wharton School, The University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with multiple honors. When not working or volunteering, he enjoys spending time with his family and scuba diving.
